Last year my grandmother fell really sick due to cancer. While she was on her death-bed living the last lessening days, guess what she told me??
She said, “I wish I had more time to love.”
Now that got me thinking!!
Wearing my nerdy reflective-glasses, I started exploring whether all humans die with the same regret?? With an urge to also learn from her mistakes, I got really obsessed with using my time efficiently.
Due to the 24-7 probing for a few days, I tried to do only the important things, but the difficult side of this easy approach was- there were too many important things to choose from and 24 hours in a day seemed really insufficient.
Giving up thinking its too rich for my blood, I dropped the maddening fact-finding.
This Diwali vacation, I experimented with my life-style.
I was inspired by Mark Zuckerberg when I came across his approach of wearing the same clothes to work everyday. He says it saved him efforts which he can invest into the community to make World, a better place, I discarded most of my clothes keeping only a few options.
Let me tell you this, I am a girl who enjoyed the movie, “Confessions of a shopaholic” eating popcorn and making wrong resolutions to be careful spending a bundle on my wardrobe. So giving away was heart-wrenching and debatable with the compulsive shopper living inside of me.
Gradual Result of that action: It actually saved me time and so much effort. (No more deciding clothes on the basis of feeling blue, light or batman-ish)
Volume is satisfactory even at the first glance, it made me feel accomplished and important!
But is it really?
If it was, then the richest people in the world should be most satisfied as they can own large volume of almost anything.
There are always going to be important things you have to choose from, but what is real worth your time- only you can answer for yourself. Being efficient while being effective is the real deal.. (Efficiency is doing a certain task in the most effective way possible. Effectiveness on the other hand is doing your best to reach your goal.)
So the thing about time that I learned from my thorough night-hours of dark-circles (Being a slow learner) is:
1- Working ample amount of time on a project will still just have a specific contribution in your life.
Growing up through that tedious educational system where the internal turmoil is all about assignments and submissions, there was a final research paper I was due the next day. Even though I had the whole semester to work on it, I worked on it the last day having coffee like a mad-man while all my friends worked the whole semester to finish it.
I am not saying everyone should work last minute, but I work best in the last and instead of relishing my fire-on-the-ass skills, I felt so so guilty about it. Realizing now how there was nothing to feel blame-worthy- the value of that project didn’t change from 5 to 100 percent for those who worked for the whole semester. #tough-modesty
2- You can spend hours working on an Unimportant thing and it still remains “Unimportant”.
3- Being good at something does not make it Important.
I am really good at eating ice-creams!! If you think you can finish ice-cream tub before me then sorry to break it to you, but that ain’t happening. Because I inhale ice-creams bud!
Is it an important task?
May be in Disney land, when you are on a vacation!!
Not in the Purpose world.
So my take?
